What the heck - it was our anniversary - so we booked the top of the line room at the Grand Monarque for 220 a night including breakfast. Room was excellent, as was the service and staff, special "Merci Beaucoup!" My husband and I opted for a bigger room which was indeed spacious. Our 2 room suite was beautiful with a nice soaking tub, perfect bathroom, great bed and pillows, coffee and tea set up. We woukd certainly recommend and visit again. We hope that you will keep a great memory of your stay and that you had the opportunity to enjoy the famous light show "Chartres en Lumières". Everyone we came across at the hotel, from the restaurant wait staff to the reception, were super friendly, helpful and accommodating. When I checked back in for the second half of my stay they had already taken my suitcase to my new room. I did complain about the service and standard of food to the restaurant manager, and he gave us 2 glasses of champagne ( I did not raise my concerns to get free drinks). However, you came at the reception only at 22h00 although you checked-in at 17h00 to tell us that it doen't fit you anymore. As discussed at the front desk, all our rooms are different and we're really disappointed that the first room you were in didn't fit you. Serving staff were friendly and helpful. Stayed one night here and from start to finish the staff were fab. Bedrooms and suites with a distinctive style Walls with elegant color variations, the peony atmospheres, sun and silver, damask, silks and embroideries from famous houses to dress windows, chairs and beds. The next room was a breath of fresh air thus why I say beware the room you ask for make sure you ask for a re furbed room. The hotel is short 5 min walk to Chartres Cathedral, its very central on a main modern road just outside the old town, The hotel is a classic 'grand' hotel affair with a posh facade, traditional interiors, chateau like building, with a lovely well designed outside terrace/inside bar. Very small elevator in the hotel due to old building structure. They parked our car for us in their lot down the the street. The room was large with a king sized bed - unusual to find in Europe in this price range. We stayed in the garden suite and it was lovely. Good service, attractive decor, comfortable, the staff is friendly. Indeed, for a next stay we advise you to book the gastronomic restaurant 1-2 or even 3 weeks before your arrival date because this is our peak season and especially during the week-end, the restaurant is really requested. Wi-fi was fast and reliable. Caveat emptor - I would not recommend to fellow travellers this hotel nor return. There's a lonely warm and intimate bar and some good cocktails. Comfortable beds, and fairly quiet (although there was a little noise on the Friday night as the bar/restaurant downstairs was extremely popular). By providing a key-entry or the ability to type in a code would solve the problem. We did have several issues with our room, purely needing a better plumber to fit the new spa bath and shower in the bathroom. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Chartres. To sell itself as a 'Hotel & Spa', I think the hotel should be more upfront in it's advertising to say that the spa is at an additional cost & not available to all. Beautiful hotel in the heart of this historic city. Located in a central location adjacent to the old town centre the hotel was everything we hoped it would be. There are simply not enough of them, therefore good practice is broken, empty plates are left on the tables when clients leave, piled up on decorative work stations next to diners or even left for ages at the diners tables. The suite was serviced once daily to a very high standard. I selected the Monarque because it revived great reviews and I was not disappointed. The access is indeed non-included in the price of our rooms to leave our guests free to decide if they want to enjoy this service or not. Comfortable hotel with a great location if you are visiting Chartres to see the cathedral. In the evening, Chartres lights up, and we were in a perfect location to enjoy the light show. The hotel is also very central to all the sights of Chartres but is still quiet for a good night's sleep. Maybe lacking a towel rail under each of the wash hand basins. The restaurant is Michelin starred, but if you need somewhere a little more modest, you are simply a road width away from the pedestrianised city area with great brasseries. Our bedroom and bathroom were very comfortable and beautifully equipped with everything we could possibly need, including bottled water and, unusually for France, tea- and coffee-making equipment. Last year we didn't eat an evening meal at the hotel but this year we did, in the Brasserie, choosing the dishes of the day. Valet parking is offered, and a small charge is levied for the use of the hotel car park. Our room was very pretty and redone with quality. Fortunately, they have retained the Grand Hotel feel of the property with an elegant restaurant and bar. There is short term parking just next to the hotel for when you arrive, but it was ALWAYS full. It compared favorably with the "gourmet" meals you can find in Paris where you pay 200 Euros and up EACH. As you mentionned it, we are currently lending bicycles to our clients to allow them to fully discover our beautiful and peacefull city. Find the perfect room in the Best Western Grand Monarque, ideally located in the heart of Chartres. From the point of view of an overseas tourist it was easy to access by hire car and was graced by experienced multi-lingual staff. The same receptionist pointed out the illuminations, that now take place nightly between April & October, with 26 buildings lit with incredible interactive displays, some with musical accompaniment.
